1. Community Support and Services
Working out of their own premises, which is their HQ, community centre, workplace, and volunteers’ hostel, they coordinate a range of work and support.
They work with the local hospital, to support and lead on health matters, and HIV drug monitoring with the women.
They offer social services, community support, and home visits with a multi-disciplinary approach, supporting the women and their families.
Women with HIV, still often shunned by family and employers, are supported through counselling, home visits, and assistance with their medication.
The cooperative provides home-based care for children, as well as care for those women who are sick or elderly.
They maintain and manage the properties.
The cooperative encourages a supportive community among its members.
2. Education and Training
The cooperative runs training workshops and production workshops.
They train women to be self-employed, supporting them in setting up and running their own businesses.
Training includes finance and agriculture, as well as skills for producing goods such as textiles and jewelry.
They have a school nearby for the children of the women, providing education from birth to age six.
3. Business and Economic Empowerment

The founding story of our HIV+ women empowerment project
A Social Worker’s Compassion
The Women’s cooperative was founded by Mary, a social worker, in 1996, who, after working with children with HIV quickly realised that to improve the lives of the children, their mothers’ lives had to be improved.
The children Mary worked with were economically disadvantaged, either affected by HIV or infected themselves. More often than not, their mothers were single, suffering from HIV/AIDS, using drugs, and economically destitute.
Mary believed that HIV+ women, when healthy, emotionally stable, and economically empowered, can take care of their children instead of them being placed in homes, or living on the street.
The Triangle of Support and Training
The NGO’s support for women is based upon three principles: stabilization, empowerment and thriving. Over a 12 month programme, women are supported to learn and develop skills, and offered mentoring. When strengthened with these skills and hope, they have the power to face life and be the best mothers they can be.
In addition, they are given microfinance business training, and lent startup capital, enabling them to begin their businesses.
Arts, crafts, textiles, jewelry and self fulfilment
The cooperative makes a range of products, that we sell for their incomes, each woman having overcome challenges and found strength in their creativity.
Each product tells a story of resilience, determination, and the power of collaboration, from intricately woven baskets that celebrate local traditions to unique jewelry pieces that showcase the beauty of African craftsmanship
Our collection represents the rich heritage of Kenya while embracing modern designs.
