Elective Description
Embark on an enriching elective in Sri Lanka, at a major teaching hospital. Here are six specialty wards, and 15 sub-specialties. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to healthcare in a low-income, low resourced setting, developing adaptability and clinical acumen.
Sri Lanka provides free healthcare, and your presence will not only enhance your own medical knowledge, but contribute to the learning of local medical students. By sharing your experiences and engaging in discussions, you will help broaden their understanding of global medical practices, and English.

Your day will begin with ward rounds from 08:00 – 12:00, joining TH students as they assess and manage patients across multiple disciplines. You may choose to extend your experience by staying for afternoon shifts, night shifts, and weekend rotations.
You’ll have access to a diverse range of specialties, including:
• Core Specialties: A&E, General Medicine, General Surgery, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Psychiatry
• Sub-Specialties: Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Clinical Pathology, Dermatology, ENT, Forensic Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, STD, Urology/Nephrology
Whilst A&E, and the OPD are not included in the ward rounds, you have the option to observe and participate in these busy environments too.
This elective provides a dynamic environment where you’ll witness a broad spectrum of medical conditions, refining your diagnostic and treatment skills while gaining valuable cross-cultural experience.

Your accommodation will be at the Fig and Gecko Hostel, offering half-board (5 days a week) and B&B (2 days a week). During your free time, explore the historical wonders of Anuradhapura, embark on safaris, and marvel at the region’s diverse wildlife and birdlife.
Afternoons offer flexibility—you can extend your hospital experience or unwind at local hotel swimming pools. For those seeking adventure, pristine beaches are just a 90-minute drive east or west, where you can enjoy diving, kite surfing, and other water sports.

Medical Elective Ghana

Location: Accra (GH)
Elective Description
Our medical electives at a TH or a GH in Accra (see Additional Info for price variance), provide dynamic learning environments.
Your elective is managed by our partner health NGO, led by a medical and public health professional. When a group of elective students join together, the NGO conducts medical outreaches to areas with limited access to health services, enabling you to gain invaluable hands-on experience.
Public Health students, and volunteers without a medical background can also participate should you wish a friend to join you.

Under the guidance of hospital managers and ward supervisors, you will have the opportunity to work across various departments or focus on a specific specialization of your choice. You may also participate in community medical outreach programs as they arise.

Additional fees for the TH are a registration fee $275, and a weekly fee of $55.
