Opportunities for dental volunteering in Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, and Sri Lanka with the army dental corps

If you are looking an opportunity to give your skills as a dentist to people in low income and low countries, and resourced settings, which can provide experience to apply to join MSF, then we offer 4 excellent places for you. We have three very different settings in, Africa, in Kenya, Ghana, and Uganda as well as a unique setting with the Sri Lanka army dental corps.

Dental volunteering with the Sri Lanka Army has many benefits, not least the wide range of practice on offer, as this is a place where dentists come to improve their own skills and knowledge on the path to becoming consultants. You can find out more about the SL army dental corps here

dental volunteering for MSF criteria
  • The Sri Lanka Army Dental Hospitals

GAFV have a unique agreement with the Sri Lanka Army, by which qualified dentists (and others) may volunteer with their dental corps in their two main army hospitals in Colombo, and Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

In contrast to the civilian hospitals, the army dental hospitals are superbly resourced and staffed. They have a patient base of 1.2m consisting of army personnel (serving, veterans, and retired), and their immediate families, each receiving a full range of treatments, including crowns, bridges etc, free of charge.

  • As you will work under the supervision of the army, you will be able to practice on your licence, however, to practice in a civilian hospital, we will need to obtain a local licence for you.

dentistry volunteering abroad
  • In each low income country you will experience health care provision in a low resourced setting, and you will be warmly welcomed.

In Kenya, you may also volunteer in the private sector.

There is no free health care in these countries, and access to dentists is limited by locality (most dentists are based), and cost.

How you carry out your practice in each country will be determined by the local hospital, clinic, and in Ghana and Uganda by our health partners for organise outreaches. Outreaches are carried out in Kenya under the health ministry. In each country these are from time to time as arranged.

  • Qualified Dentists can practice for up to 12 weeks (Uganda, Ghana), on your own licence under local health boards pre-arranged approval.

In Kenya, on arrival, you will be able to gain a Kenyan licence to practice for up to one year.

In each country, you may arrange your own accommodation and food, or use our partners’ set up for those.

  • Charges are shown separately. These are for:

    1. licence, visa, placement management and support (ongoing), and any hospital charges.

    2. For accommodation with food.

Transport is not included as this can be arranged locally, if needed.

  • Ghana

Qualified dentists can carry out dental volunteering with us in Ghana in a main hospital in western Accra. It is in this city where the majority of Ghana’s dental professionals are located.

Depending on the number of dental volunteers (and they can operate with as few as 4), our local medical partner organisation arranges village outreaches, drawing many who have little access to dental care due to finances and location.

Your dentist volunteering will have a significant impact on the dental care of patients, wherever you are volunteering.

You will be licenced to work by the hospital for 12 weeks, which will be arranged in advance.

Depending on the number of dental volunteers, our local partners arrange village outreaches, drawing many who have little access to dental care due to finances and location.

You can work a 4-5 day week, giving you time to explore as well.

  • Kenya

We have a number of opportunities for qualified volunteer dentists across Kenya, in a variety of medical settings, and geographic settings - from the Kakamega equatorlal forest area in the west, to Lake Victoria, and the Maasai people around the Maasai Mara in the south, across to the Indian Ocean coast.

You will be licenced for up to 12 weeks (obtaining this in person on arrival), after we have checked and sought prior approval.

Whether in Kenya, or Ghana, your volunteering will have a huge impact and be welcomed by people and professionals alike.
