Our dentist volunteering placements are in Ghana (Accra), Kenya, and with the Sri Lanka army dental corps
If you are looking for dentist volunteering, we offer 3 excellent places for you, with a range of differing opportunities. Kenya, and Ghana are low resourced and low income settings, whereas the Sri Lanka army dental corps are well resourced, and staffed, within otherwise low resourced civilian setting.
The army provides free treatment to serving army personnel and veterans, as well as to their immediate families, a patient base of 1.2m.
Dental volunteering with the Sri Lanka Army has many benefits, not least the wide range of practice on offer, as this is a place where dentists come to improve their own skills and knowledge on the path to becoming consultants.
Dental Volunteering in Sri Lanka
Locations: Colombo, and Anuradhapura
Weeks: 2 - 52
Code: SL-De-De
Description:
The Sri Lanka Army Dental Hospitals
GAFV have a unique agreement with the Sri Lanka Army, by which qualified dentists (and others) may volunteer with their dental corps in their two main army hospitals in Colombo, and Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
In contrast to the civilian hospitals, the army dental hospitals are superbly resourced and staffed. They have a patient base of 1.2m consisting of army personnel (serving, veterans, and retired), and their immediate families, each receiving a full range of treatments, including crowns, bridges etc, free of charge.
As you will work under the supervision of the army, you will be able to practice on your licence, however, to practice in a civilian hospital, we will need to obtain a local licence for you.
For a full description of these incredible dental volunteering opportunities with the Sri Lanka Army, please read the information on our Sri Lanka Army Dental Corps page.
Dental Volunteering in Africa

Weeks: 2 - 12

Ghana
Qualified dentists can carry out dental volunteering with us in Ghana in a main hospital in western Accra. It is in this city where the majority of Ghana’s dental professionals are located.
Depending on the number of dental volunteers (and they can operate with as few as 4), our local medical partner organisation arranges village outreaches, drawing many who have little access to dental care due to finances and location.
Your dentist volunteering will have a significant impact on the dental care of patients, wherever you are volunteering.
You will be licenced to work by the hospital for 12 weeks, which will be arranged in advance.
Depending on the number of dental volunteers, our local partners arrange village outreaches, drawing many who have little access to dental care due to finances and location.
You can work a 4-5 day week, giving you time to explore as well.
Kenya
We have a number of opportunities for qualified volunteer dentists across Kenya, in a variety of medical settings, and geographic settings - from the Kakamega equatorlal forest area in the west, to Lake Victoria, and the Maasai people around the Maasai Mara in the south, across to the Indian Ocean coast.
You will be licenced for up to 12 weeks (obtaining this in person on arrival), after we have checked and sought prior approval.
Whether in Kenya, or Ghana, your volunteering will have a huge impact and be welcomed by people and professionals alike.
